Indie-pop group Scenic Route to Alaska just released their new single, “How It Feels”, just ahead of their Tough Luck album release in March and their cross-Canadian, American and European tours this year.
In the first few seconds of the song, the guitar and bass intertwine with each other, creating a captivating groove and nice foundation for the lyrics next to come. I am a sucker for good lyrics, and my favorite lyric lands right before the chorus: “cards get dealt out, and I’m all in.” For Scenic Route to Alaska, the song’s message to the universe echoes the difficulty of finding love while touring. I love that their lyrics mention love in terms of the cards we are dealt at the hands of fate and how we choose to go all in anyway, no matter the hand we get. The lyrics also mention a constant search for something, which I can guarantee we have all looked for at least once in our lives, becoming more frustrated when we turn up nothing. Still, we search for meaning, for significance… and Scenic Route to Alaska gets that.
Musically, my favorite moment is the chorus at the end of the song, where all the extra instruments melt away, leaving us just with the electric guitar and vocal before adding in the drums, basses and backing vocals. The chorus of the song really gives it that anthem feel, especially with the addition of the backing vocals affirming the words of the song. It sounds as if all of us are being given the chance to sing along, together, and identify with their love struggle too.
How It Feels has all its boxes checked: a catchy tune you have to sing along to, clever lyrics, a nice groove and a resonating message. As if all that was not enough already, it even has an entertaining wrestling-themed music video that’s well worth the watch.
