Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Sir Thelonious is a renaissance man in the world of art being a singer, poet, emcee, and photographer.
His music specializes in abstract penmanship and he finds influence in his music style from Thelonious Monk, Slum Village, Saul Williams, Bilal Salaam, & A Tribe Called Quest.
In 2015 he came out with his independent album “echoes of a (nu)bian soul…” which was also re-released in 2018. The album speaks about the ideas of individuality, self-acceptance, and freedom within truth.
On December 2nd, 2018, Thelonious came out with his latest single “nwk,” a homage to his hometown that raised him and made him who he is today, a place that he has love and hope for.
The song, stylistically, reminds me of Kendrick Lamar’s song “Compton” and how though both Compton and Newark are dangerous cities, they are still loved by the people who were born and raised there.
Thelonious has pride in the city of Newark but wants better for the people and the atmosphere overall. As he states, “I don’t glorify the ghetto but I’m glorious from it.”
